We answer your questions!

What is decarbonizing purchasing?

Decarbonizing purchasing, also known as "low-carbon purchasing", means committing to practices aimed at reducing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions emitted during a company's or public authority's procurement process.

This means that organizations need to calculate the carbon footprint of their products and services, which also includes the activities associated with their production, transport and disposal - in other words, the entire supply chain. The challenge is to minimize this impact by choosing more environmentally sustainable products and suppliers.

The decarbonization of purchasing can include the following solutions:

  • Evaluating its business data through a greenhouse gas balance sheet
  • Choosing sustainable purchasing
  • Working with suppliers who have environmentally friendly practices
  • Involvement in carbon contribution projects.

Decarbonizing purchasing is therefore a genuine strategy to be adopted by companies and local authorities. It is a way of meeting the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting more sustainable, environmentally friendly practices throughout the supply chain. All this to contribute to the fight against climate change and promote the transition to a low-carbon economy.

How can I invite my customers and suppliers to the GCI platform?

GCI offers a complete tool for sending invitations and emission factor requests/transmissions.

You can invite your suppliers to the platform so that they can calculate the carbon footprint of all their products. You can also transmit your emission factors to your customers, enabling them to measure their carbon impact more accurately.

Is it simple for my suppliers or does it require training?

The platform is designed for all users, ranging from beginners to experts. With video tutorials, FAQs, and methodological guides, your suppliers can easily learn how to use the tool for calculating the carbon footprint of products, without requiring any specialized training on the topic.

What are the benefits for my suppliers?

The benefits are simple:

  • Free calculation of the carbon footprint of their products
  • Compliance of calculations with ISO 14067
  • Direct transmission of the calculated emission factors from the GCI platform to its customers.
Is the GCI platform free for my suppliers?

The tool for calculating the carbon footprint of products is available free of charge to all. Your suppliers can then calculate the emission factor of each product in their catalogue.

If you'd like to take a more comprehensive approach to your company's carbon footprint, you can do so on the GCI platform by purchasing an annual license.

What can I do if my supplier doesn't fill in the emission factors for its products?

While waiting to get the emission factors of your suppliers' products, you can:

  • Use an emission factor from a database provided by GCI (Base Carbone, BEIS ex-UK DEFRA, Ecoinvent, Inies, etc.....)
  • Use the Composite Emission Factor tools which allow you to calculate the carbon footprint of your suppliers' products based on information about the components and processes involved in manufacturing the products.
Does the data collected from my suppliers get included in my Carbon Inventory?

Yes, the data collected from your suppliers can be integrated into your Carbon Footprint. You can use your suppliers' emission factors directly in your Carbon Footprint in the "Incoming Materials and Services" section.
